GARDASIL® – also known as the HPV vaccine – has been at the center of many controversial debates. Developed by Merck & Co to prevent some forms of human papillomavirus (HPV), it was marketed as a safeguard from cervical cancer, as well as certain STIs and other cancers. The vaccine, given as a three-dose series, became available in 2006. Who gets GARDASIL?

When GARDASIL was introduced, it was marketed primarily to girls and women. Today, it is recommended that boys also receive the vaccine to protect against STIs such as genital warts and anal cancer. According to Merck & Co., the vaccine helps prevent HPV-related cancer and diseases caused by HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18. (There are more than 100 known types.) The GARDASIL website states that the vaccine is appropriate for both girls and boys as young as nine and as old as 26.
